After being graced with the fine piano playing of Ned Meisner, President Bob Baker started the meeting promptly with 34 members being present along with approximately 12 guests (who were all recognized by waving their hands). The Thought of the Day was given by Eric Birkenstein who supported the efforts of our country to normalize relations with Cuba. Gina Di Sandro led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Bob Baker announced the following future programs: January 8 –Sandy Sullivan talking about her experiences involving the Green Bay Packers; January 15—Chief Lustig from the Northfield Police Department talking about the current challenges in law enforcement; January 22—Tim McCabe giving us an update on the Community House’s “2nd 100 year” project.
Bob then recognized the serving staff who have done such a marvelous job in serving our lunches throughout the year: Mary Keane, Cathy Clark, Femande Trausch and, of course the leader of the pack, Donna Goodman. This crew was ably assisted this particular lunch by such notable Rotarians as Tim McCabe, Joe Fell and “straw boss” Bob Mardirossian. (It was suggested that they be added to the regular crew for all our luncheons!)
Bob recognized Lee Padgitt’s December birthday and Mark Kotz’ 4 years as a Rotarian. Unlike our usual custom, they actually paid to have us sing the Happy Birthday song!
Tony Kambich reported that he was privileged to have visitors from Uganda for 2 weeks during the holidays—Joseph JOlanya, his wife Christina and their 4 children. Joseph was President of
his Rotary chapter in Uganda.
Heidi Sibert reminded the group that the “Kids Against Hunger” program is set for March 21st and that she would welcome all Rotarians to assist in the event.
Due to the lack of time, David Birkenstein had the option of not doing his Dig-n-Grin joke, but because he had rehearsed it all week for his grandson Scott, who was present at the meeting, David was not to be denied and he performed it well!
The New Trier Swing Choir then made their 27th consecutive Holiday presentation to the Club. Sixteen high school kids dressed in dark suits and dresses were led by Choir Director Nathan Landis as they sang 10 holiday songs and a couple of their usual jazz numbers. The quality of the singing, direction, and overall presentation of the program made everyone feel as if some of their tax dollars were going for a good cause!
The next Rotary meeting will not be held until next year!! Happy Holiday Season and hope to see you next year.
