President Eric inducted new member Tom Nash as the first new member of 2014. Tom is a mortgage loan originator who grew up in Winnetka and was sponsored by his brother Joe. There are several others new members waiting to be inducted. Kudos to David Birkenstein and his membership committee for the great job they have been doing.
John Thomas was given a “Moment to Shine.” Following a career in business that entailed a great deal of travel, John has settled down to an active life of volunteerism in his retirement. He has served on the Executive Committees of the local Council of Girl Scouts (the only male member) and the United Way Board of Winnetka/Northfield until those boards were subsumed by the larger area boards. John has also served for many years on the board for the Winnetka Youth Organization, serving several terms as chair. He has also been active in Winnetka affairs, serving as a member of the village caucus and he has been serving on the Park District Board since 2005.

The speaker this week was our own member Arthur Frank, the owner of Round Table Books, which deals antique and collectible books. Arthur showed us three very rare and very expensive books. One was the “Little Sea Torch” that had many colored illustrations of the ports in the Mediterranean. 200 copies were published in 1801 to serve as guides for the British navy. He also showed us “The Ferns of Great Britain and Ireland,” which was created by using actual ferns in the printing process that produced a 3D image. The third book was one of only four copies of the English illustrated version of “Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam." It is the most popular poem in the English language. Arthur had very interesting stories on how the books affect the lives of the authors. The value of the three books ranged from $16 to $19.5 K.
