The day’s speaker was Tim Padgett who is the founder and CEO of the Pepper Group, a marketing firm.  The main emphasis of Tim’s presentation was the important role that an organization’s culture plays in the success of the organization.  Tim is an admirer of the Cubs’ manager, Joe Madden for the atmosphere he was able to create with the team.  There is going to be a lot of competition for great employees and also for good clients. His human resource goal could be summed up with the phrase:  “Attract Them, Hire Them & Keep Them.”

Tim stated that the culture is reflected in the organization’s values, purposes, vision and mission.  He gave many examples of what companies can do to create at warm and welcoming atmosphere where the culture leads to improved employee retention as well as client retention.  This usually leads to greater profitability for the company.  Tim reported that some companies set up their own in-house restaurant and movie review board where employees are encouraged to post their own reviews.  He also believes that employees must have fun and management should help facilitate that by encouraging after-hour groups to engage in social activities e.g., book clubs, theater outings, Sporting events outings or participation, etc.  The presentation was well received
