Meeting Notes 9/28
President Bob led today’s meeting with 13 in-person Rotarians, and 1 zoomer (Tony).
Announcements:  Several updates on October Meetings/Service Projects/Benefits that members need to put in their calendars:
10/12/23 Barb has arranged a service project at the Glencoe Gardens.
10/13/23 Rich reminds us to buy tickets for the October 13 Operation warm concert/Party/Benefit.
10/19/23 President Bob will chair the monthly Rotary Board meeting after our regularly scheduled lunch and in lieu of a program that day.  This is a departure from the Board meeting before lunch. The change is made to facilitate members being able to attend a memorial service for Rodger Morris which will be held at the Community House starting at 2:00pm.
Happy Bucks:
Tony is happy to be alive after a trip to the Highland Park Hospital last Friday to have his appendix removed.
Peter:  If you have trouble getting an appointment to renew your Illinois Driver’s license, he has a great tip for you.  If you are a senior, walk-ins are accepted at the Evanston Civic Center Building (2100 Ridge) from 8:00am – 4:00pm on weekdays.
Barb:  her nephew threw out the first pitch at a Cubs game.
Moha:  Thank you to Rich for all he has done to publicize the Moroccan earthquake relief project – including putting an article in the District website.
Speaker:  Our member Amy Skalinder entertained us with ‘this date in history’ dig ‘n grins, followed by Winnetka Community House trivia. Some of my favorite trivia was that 1,836 children participated in WCH programs last year, with the largest age group being the 5–9 year-olds with 1,119.  Total hours of programming were 42,856.
The fitness center has 1,071 members who visited the WCH 62,525 times last year.
There are 58 weddings & events scheduled in 2023.
Fred Schwimmer also reminisced about all the time he spent at the WCH in his life, including going to Camp Douglas Smith in 1945, setting pins in the bowling alley as a 7th & 8th grader, going to movies here, and of course visits with Rotary.

Morocco Earthquake Relief

Around 11 pm on Friday September 8th, the strongest earthquake in more than a century struck Morocco. Moha Bouacha grew up in Timoulilt, a small village at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. Moha says that while his village suffered some damage, villages higher and deeper in the mountains were devastated. Over 3,000 people died and 5,500 injured. Some villages were reduced to rubble and 80% of their population perished. According to a UN report, 50,000 homes were destroyed and 300,000 people were affected in the three regions close to the epicenter, including the historical cities of Marrakech and Taroudant.

While Moha was President of the Belvidere, IL Rotary Club, he began a relationship between the club and Timoulilt Association for Development (ATD), an NGO in Timoulilt, Morocco. ATD is focused on the socio-economic development of Timoulilt and its region. They have partnered on projects with The Rotary Foundation on a Global Grant administered by the Rotary Clubs of Casablanca and Belvidere; USAID and the European Union and many other International aid organizations.

Here is a video recapping early earthquake relief efforts conducted by ATD shortly after the quake.

Donations to support long term recovery efforts organized by ATD can be made here.

Glencoe Gardens Service Project on 10/12
Our next service project will be on 10/12 the Glencoe Community Garden. We will start immediately at 12:15 sharp - then eat and hear the reps until 12:30.

Here's what they want us to do this year - a bit more physical than just picking ripe harvest as in year's past. But this will be very helpful to them. So I'm glad we can help.

"...what we will be doing at that time is mostly pulling plants, digging out our beds and general clean-up."

The address is 385 Old Green Bay Road.

We'll have box lunches ordered in advance. Will have a balloon outside to mark the location.
Rodger Morris
Rodger Morris, long time Rotarian in our Club and Foundation, passed away on Monday Sept 18 in Hospice.  Arrangements are not yet finalized for Memorial Service etc. Rodger was a Past President and Treasurer for our club. His generosity included making 16 people Paul Harris Fellows including the first woman in Africa to become a PH Fellow: Christine Kijange who is the Director of the Victoria Montessori School in Entebbe Uganda. The school has over 600 students including poverty level from pre-school through 6th grade. Our Club/Foundation helped start the school and helped Ms Kijange come to the US and receive Montessori Teacher Training and Internship in Deerfield , Illinois.

Rodger was also President of The Winnetka Bank (now the Chase Bank).
