Meeting Recap August 8
President Marie called the meeting to order at 12:15.
Greg Nelson offered an inspirational Thought of the Day.
President Marie asked us to ponder and discuss this question:  What is your dream job? If it isn’t your actual job, why not?
She then shared her story, letting us know that she would have preferred to be an FBI agent. While this dream was not realized, she wants us to know that “she is watching us”. ;-)
Joe Fell led us in the Pledge, and we ate lunch.
President Marie called the business meeting to order at 12:35. There were o visiting guests or visiting Rotarians.

  • August 26 – Membership Committee meeting at 8:30am
  • September 7 – Miller Park Road Trip to see Cubs/Brewers. Many members have sponsored a vet to attend.
  • September 15 – Richardson Farm District outing. Rich suggested that we sponsor a pig in the pig race, an idea that was enthusiastically accepted. $100 was quickly raised to sponsor “Queen Marie”.
Barb announced that we will be collecting items for the New Trier Township Food Pantry into September. Items needed are: Toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouthwash and dental floss. Bring your items to lunch or make a cash donation to Barb.

Happy Bucks:
Laura is happy that she, her daughter and mother are going to France and had an assist in planning from Wes with their travel plans.
Wes is happy that Laura is going to France!
Dig N Grin:
Wes shared some “female comebacks” to a male’s question.
Bill Leske introduced our speaker Randy Barba, who had visited our club previously as a guest of Carl Yudell.
Randy retired in 2004, became fascinated with the East, which ultimately resulted in a 4-month-long trip that he and his wife took to eight countries. His discussion of their trip is titled: History & Culture Influencing the Central & Northern Silk Road Countries.
He touched on these topics in his talk:
Nomads and Nomadic Traditions: The Barbas began their trip in Northern Mongolia. This entire area was nomadic for thousands of years, beginning in 200BC with the Huns. These nomads live off the animals for their existence. There are 60 million animals, 3 million people. He shared a fascinating account of the people they encountered, events they observed and a map of their extensive travels by car and plane.
Evolution of the Silk Road: In the Han Dynasty beginning in 220 BC, China was opened to the west and trade began with countries to the west. The Silk Road was obliterated by sea routes beginning in the 15th century. Randy shared amazing photos that they took of landmarks that still exist along the Silk Road.

At 1:30, Sam won the card pull but did not draw the Ace of Hearts. The meeting was adjourned.

Sponsor a Vet!

Rotary District 6440 is sponsoring a Rotary Road Trip to see the Chicago Cubs take on the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park on September 7. Our club is again sponsoring tickets for veterans, and needs members to fund those sponsorships.

Tailgate and Game tickets cost $80, which includes food catered by Saz's, beer and soft drinks, and live music under a large tent. Game tickets are Loge Bleacher seat which provide an excellent view of the field.
