Speaker Bio: Ward Wilson

Ward Wilson is a senior fellow at the Federation of American Scientists. He is widely acknowledged as the leading source of pragmatic arguments against nuclear weapons in the world today.


His book, Five Myths About Nuclear Weapons, was endorsed by two Pulitzer-Prize-winning historians of nuclear weapons, recommended by four star generals, praised by a former head of state and Nobel Peace Prize winner, and described as “brilliant, original, and important.”  He is an award-winning writer, who has been published in anti-nuclear journals like The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists and Nonproliferation Review, military journals like Joint Force Quarterly and Revue de Défense Nationale, foreign policy journals like Survival, Foreign Policy, and Harvard’s International Security, as well as in The Chicago Tribune, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and others.


He has spoken in 23 countries on six continents, at the Pentagon, the French National Assembly,the United Nations, the Scottish National Parliament, the U.S. State Department, Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, Georgetown, the Sorbonne, the U.S. Naval War College, King’s College London, Hamburg University, Nagasaki University, University of Pretoria, and others.  He is currently working on a new book, titled The Realist Case for Eliminating Nuclear Weapons.

 

Meeting Recap March 21
There were 27 members present today.  There were no guests.  President Leske presided and we sang Happy Birthday to President Bill Leske (March 25) and Todd Stephans (March 26).  There were no anniversaries. 
 
Announcements
  • Heidi Sibert was first on her feet thanking everyone who volunteered or contributed to “Kids Against Hunger.”This is our 9th year and the group packed 900,000 meals.  Heidi offered special thanks to the Community House, the Volunteer Center, the Winnetka Park District and all the sponsors and volunteers that made the task easier with all the helping hands.
  • Rich Lalley reminded everyone of the Rotary Training Seminar coming up on April 6.
Happy Bucks:  Barb Tubekis, Wes Baumann and Robert Mardirossian all contributed Happy Bucks in recognition of Heidi and her team’s successes.  David Grant contributed Happy Bucks in recognition of his daughter’s selection as an All American Hockey player.
 
Dig and Grin:  Rich Lalley left them laughing and happy to have contributed.
 
Speaker:   Marci Sutter spoke on behalf of the upcoming Winnetka Music Festival, Friday and Saturday June 21 and 22.  It will be a fabulous show with 21+ acts.  There will be two main stages this year and virtually constant music. Wristbands will be $20 for the Saturday night performances.  Otherwise, all the music and entertainment will be free.  As a special incentive, organizations that provide 10 or more volunteers will receive 2 free wristbands.  All volunteers on Saturday night will receive free wristbands. 
 
The Festival features all genres of music with some national acts and emerging artists.  Many of the acts have gone national after presenting at previous Winnetka Festivals.  There will be food trucks and mixed drinks.  The Festival is kids and dog friendly.  For more information, check out the website at https://www.winnetkamusicfestival.com/
